Pretty cool book. It was gifted to me by a friend. It's essentially a guide to becoming self-reliant in social communication. The amalgam of techniques in the book makes it an initiatory guide for communication and self-defense. One essential thing I remember from the book is that everything in life is a communication- in some form or another. By learning to identify what is truly being communicated in any situation most all conflicts can be handled with grace, language, and compassion as the bottom line- even when things get tense. The book also contains a self-training guide in the martial arts techniques (though, I have to say, it is a little difficult to get trained in the physical arts without at least a little training- but the training was pretty cool and worth it. i ended up going through with some of the training.). I really like this MLK jr quote from the Conflict Arts website. Had to chck out the site after i got the book: "The ultimate weakness of violence is that it... More > is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." -Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. That quote really sums up the ethics communicated through the book.< Less
