"Did I Ever Tell You About Billy Fuschia?" I'm a 'whodunnit', 'history' sort of girl but a friend who'd read 'Billy Fuchsia' gave me a copy and said I should read I did and what a cracking read it is. It's the story of one Yorkshireman's bid to escape the rat race of the 70's with a complete change of life style. From the hustle and bustle of one of the county's busy cities, he ups sticks to a remote part of Scotland: Caithness. He rents a cottage in the middle of nowhere and that's when things really begin. A miriad of characters turn up to help, advise and show how things are done. 'Billy Fuchsia' is a bitter sweet tale, absolutely hilarious in parts - even the world's idiots live in the far flung corners of the world - and it's also very sad with disappointment and a lost love. It's also a tale of humanity, friendship and the willingness of community to help each other. The local grapevine is much better at communiction than the phone in the box down the... More > road. Have a read and become embroiled in the folk in the caravan park, the postman who left open the gate with dire consequences, a hungry pony which attempted to eat Aunty Gladys, the removal van with an anti-social dog aboard, the idiotic scout master, building a snow woman with an appropriately placed tuft of grass and much, much more. Laugh, cry, worry and be exasperated with Martin Thompson-Oram on his adventures as he attemps to start a new life in Caithness. Oh yes! Why Billy Fuchsia? Well you'll pick up Billy in the story, he's around a lot. Why Fuchsia? You'll have to read it to discover the answer to that one. Sue Faller.< Less
