“No Ordinary Woman: The Life of Ruth E. Considine", written and edited by Mary Ann Sachse Brown (author of “Remembering Lowemont”) details the life of Ruth Considine (1898-1979), a daughter of John E. Considine, who was the first white male born in 1857 on the townsite of Grasshopper Falls, which is now Valley Falls, Kansas. Miss Considine was born and raised in Atchison, but never married. However, she loved children, her large family, caring for others and especially a love of learning. The book features the biography of Miss Considine, an illustrated children’s story she often told, “The Cow from Grasshopper Falls”, and the full text of her dissertation, “The Kansas Pioneer Woman 1854-1864” written in 1939, which explores the role of women in Leavenworth, Atchison and Douglas counties during the early Kansas Territorial period.
