What happens to the materiality of language in the digital medium? This thesis articulates a body of work highly invested in trans-mediation: a back and forth process between the physical and the digital media to create random arrangements of visual and auditory immersive experiences. A reflective methodology collects consumer packages in an attempt to keep a record of the environment. A labour intensive approach rejects all reflection and appropriates these packages to produce a body of work. This practice is compared and contrasted to the works of artists and designers such as Tom Friedman, Tara Donovan, Richard Rhys, Polly Apbfelbaum, Allan McCollum... Through the lens of concrete poetry and conceptual art a highly formal approach is articulated in the work. The content of written language is the form of the word, the content of oral language is the sound of the utterance. The work translates from one content to the other through a seamless integration of digital and physical processes.
