"Embracing Darkness by Mary Jo Tyler 5 stars" “Embracing Darkness” is an excellent book. I highly recommend it. As a Spiritual director and as a Stephen Minister I’ve accompanied many people on their spiritual journeys: sometimes on their final journey. Mary Jo Tyler’s book reveals the intimate story of how she faced the long-lingering, tragic death of her son. It begins when Mary Jo receives news that her son has been in a very serious accident. As she travels to reach her son’s bedside she agonizes over the extent of his injuries. When she sees Jason she is confronted with the heart breaking realization that his life hangs by a thread. As Mary Jo’s story unfolds she takes us by our hands and our hearts as she journeys through the valley of the shadow of death. Mary Jo’s faith gives her courage to delve deeply into her feelings as Jason’s struggle turns from days to months to years. Time after time after time Mary Jo turns to God with her anger, her questions, her... More > confusion and her doubts. Her suffering is further complicated because she is also a nurse. Mary Jo’s journey reminds me of The Book of Job. Both are seriously questioning God when confronted with so much suffering. Mary Jo, like Job, comes to experience how redemptive suffering brings new life, a transformed life, which is a gift of God’s Grace. I'm thankful Mary Jo wrote this book. When you read it you will be too.< Less

"Embracing Darkness" I found this memoir, of the author's personal and spiritual struggle with the accident, coma, and death of her son, deeply moving and openly informative. Having not experienced such an event, I was descriptively drawn into her pain and suffering and her journey to eventual acceptance of her son's condition. As a spiritual director, I gained insight into a mother's heart that will help me in the future. It will be invaluable information for me to rely on when meeting with directees, working as a Stephen Minister, or encountering those who walk through the loss of a child.

"Embracing Darkness, Mary Jo Tyler" If you liked "The Shack" then Embracing Darkness is a must read. It takes you on a spiritual journey that poses the question, "Where are You, God?" A very moving and heart-(and soul)wrenching account of a mother's quest for God in the midst of her despair as she witnesses her son's life slowly slipping away. When there appears to be no light, the author chooses to embrace the darkness.
