Verse as a vehicle for narrative has been out of fashion in recent years, but Karaba brings new life to story-via-poetry in this breathtaking tour de force about a young woman's heartbreaking struggle with substance abuse and her attempts to understand herself. This is a modern-day Ask Alice. Yes, Maxine, is struggling with addition, but she is a fully drawn character who is not just defined by that struggle. In her, we recognize our own children, even ourselves. She struggles with love, defining who she is, and friendships. While this is not a warm story, it is a thought-provoking one that shows all to vividly the journey that all adolescents must go through to discover their true selves.

“Infatuation” provides a chilling glimpse into the very real horrors of substance abuse. And yet, this story transcends high over the average cautionary tale. Told in the form of poetry, the emotions expressed by Maxine and the other characters prove both realistic and thought-provoking. In a story somewhat similar to the novels of Ellen Hopkins, Mary Karaba offers a fresh take on the problems that afflict teenagers, woven through her beautifully-crafted plot. Profound in its interpretations of alienation, acceptance, infatuation, and redemption, this story is a must-read for all who enjoy a suspenseful book. I must warn you, however… once you have started, you won’t be able to stop.

this book is amazingly well written in the form of poetry. this book really makes readers take a close look at the the life of Maxine, a nice girl in the day and a wild partier at night. In brings what could happen to people who party all the time into the limelight. A great read for anyone who loves poetry.

A thrilling novel, full of mystery, humor, conflict, and reality! This book is a favorite. The characters are very three dimensional and the story itself draws me in. I couldn't put it down! Definitely worth buying!
