This is a reprint of a book first published in 1907. Mary MacGregor was a "juvenile historical" author - although probably well above the level of modern teenagers. The title "The Netherlands" is misleading, it is almost entirely a biography of the first William of Orange (known here as William the Silent, not the one who came to England). As such it narrates the facts well. It is an easy read, but old-fashioned in style, e.g. "The Lady Mary bethinks herself that now perchance ...". As was typical of writers of her time, MacGregor cannot praise her hero too highly nor sufficiently stress the villainy of his enemies.
