Two islands - two stories, draw us back to the 1850s when courageous young women set sail for the South Pacific. All were responding to invitations from their governments to colonize these valuable newly discovered lands. Meg and her father visit the brutal English penal settlement on Norfolk Island. Clotilde and her companions leave the security of a French orphanage bound for New Caledonia. Will they find adventure, love and happiness in exotic far away places?

Mary Mageau has cleverly and carefully crafted two stories set in the South Pacific into one book; each story is discreet and this makes for quick and easy reading. On the one hand Mary writes of French orphaned girls who chose to make the perilous trip from France to the French colony of Grande Terre (to become New Caledonia). These girls had lost their families and so had only their convent orphanage upbringing to guide them in making their lives. When they reached Grande Terre they found that fashion and 'the French way' still ruled. On the other hand Meg was brought up in the warmth and companionship of a British family - straight-laced though they might have been - and left that warmth to travel with her father to the brutal penal colony of Norfolk Island. What happens to the girls portrayed in this delightful book is revealed to the reader through Mary's powers of observation, her ability to draw the characters and make them thoroughly believable, and her light touch and sense... Mary Mageau weaves two charming tales of romance and discovery into the fabric of early settlement on beautiful Norfolk Island and New Caledonia, in 'Finding Love in Distant Lands'. Beautifully written and easy to read, these two stories will delight both young and old as they journey with the inexperienced Meg and Clotilde to their new homes, there to seek identity and adventure, whilst finding love along the way.
