Below are the reviews for an earlier version of this book: By hoylepa It only happens now and again that such a lovely and heartening book comes along. Mary’s story is a truly American one told with candor and warmth that offers a unique look at a very special era in our country’s history. There is something for everyone -- great for kids to better appreciate the lives of their grandparents generation and a charming stroll back in time for those who grew up in those years. It’s easy and enjoyable to read, and it includes lots of little gems like photographs and even a recipe. You put down the book thinking of Mary Hamilton as a good friend. By ned.ann.sweeney I just completed reading "It Only Happens Now and Then" and found it to be delightful, interesting and inspiring. Mary P. Hamilton writes just like she speaks, seriously but with her Irish humor showing through all the time. Her style of writing makes for very enjoyable and easy reading. I thank Mary for sharing her... More > "Personal Memoir" with us. By Mary Peaty It Only Happens Now and Then..." is a charming memoir filled with enchanting stories of growing up in what is unfortunately now a bygone era. Born to hard working Irish immigrant parents, Mary Hamilton was raised to have complete confidence in her abilities and to make good life choices. This book is humorous, engaging and sweet. It is more then a memoir though; it is a Love Story. Mary's love for her parents, her children, her friends, and her husband Jim is grounded in her love of God. She is indomitable and when all else fails, always knows that God is with her.” By Marie Farrell A joy to read, a delight to remember. By Delia Gilmore My friend, knowing I grew up in Brooklyn, gave me this book to read, saying she "thought I'd enjoy it." I loved the book. We are introduced, through Mary Hamilton's many stories of her years growing up in Brooklyn, to her Irish heritage, married life, children and the wonderful people who fill her life and touch her heart. Great read.< Less
