Mary Platt Parmele (1843 - 1911) was an American historian and writer. She was born in Albany, New York, educated in New York and from 1892 began contributing philosophical articles and short stories to reviews and magazines. Parmele's most successful books were a number of "Short History" books of various countries written in the late 19th and early 20th century. Her "Short History of..." books included France, England, United States, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Her style is a elegant tale that ties together the various historical moments of a country in easy to read, wide-ranging text, or as we read in one contemporary review of Parmele's work (1893, Hartford Post): "Her book leaves out the innumerable incidents and figures which are of great importance to students, but which are not necessary in a book for general reading, and presents the narrative in a graphic manner, in which the interest of the reader never flags."
