Mary White’s “Breathe Child, Breathe” is a fascinating story of tragedy and triumph. In researching and telling the story of her family and ancestors, Mary offers the reader incredible insight into what life was like growing up as a Black woman in the Deep South before the Civil Rights movement. If the book was just that, it would be a most interesting read, but Mary goes on to share with readers her own pains and struggles, her search for meaning and truth, and ultimately, her close walk with God which has sustained her from the very day she was born. “Breathe Child, Breathe” not only is an incredible historical treasure, it is an inspirational story that each of us can celebrate her. Feb 5, 2009"Breath Child Breathe" I first met Mary professionally many years ago and we lost touch for several years until about three years ago when we met again professionally. I never really new, REALLY NEW, her until I came to learn how her faith and love for God has guided her through the years and saved her life. Considered by me now as a close friend, she has come from living in the South in conditions most people could never, ever begin to understand, to losing a child to pulling her self up from the depths of despair and putting her faith and experience in words in Breathe Child Breathe. Her faith and love of God and her life changing experiences growing up as a daughter and grandaughter of slaves, has permitted her to write a truly inspiring book everyone should read, especially to regain faith for yourself. In writing this, cathartic experience, Mary had to weigh the risk of telling the real truth of living as a slave with the pain she might generate in her family by telling... More > the truth that many of us may not ever have the courage to do in a lifetime. You really need to read this book more than once to really absorb the story of this very strong woman and those people that touched her life and continue to do so in faith, hope, and love. Mary's faith has been responsible for restoring my faith in God and that there is a purpose in life for everything, sometimes we just don't always know what that is, until things happen in life that can truly only be God's miricles. Truly remarkable! This book should be a movie....Oprah are you listening?< Less

Apr 8, 2008"Breathe Child Breathe" Breathe Child Breathe is informative, insightful and very engaging. Mary White reminds us of who we are and how to overcome our personal struggles by relying on our faith. Breathe Child Breathe offers a consistent message of hope and encouragemetn for all types of situations in life. By reading Breathe Child Breathe I came to know Mary White and her family on a deeper level because of her openess honesty, and willingness to allow the reader into her life. Mary White's book will challenge many stereotypes about African Americans as she tells the story of her ancestors whose history can be traced by to two slaves in the early 1800's. The main character is her grandmother who had a powerful impact in her community in as mid-wife, missionary, evangelist, plantation owner and daughter of a slave. Part two deals with Mary's life and how she overcame. I am very proud of her for writing her story and sharing her family's life with us. This is a must read for...
