The denizens of Middletown are forever enshrined in the first, last and only “Out of the Gene Pool” collection that contains the best moments from all 6 ½ years of the syndicated comic strip. Rufus, Andy, Miller, Jackie, Travis, Sam, Zoogie and Madame Red are all together in this not-so-pretty portrait of modern-day society.

"Great collection of a sadly underrated strip." This is a 'best of' book collection of the syndicated comic strip "Out of the Gene Pool," which sadly ended its run in June. I've read this strip almost since the beginning, at first, online, but half-way through the run, my newspaper began running it, so I started reading it in print, too, and in the process, clipped out and saved much of the strip as I could, so I have a healthy collection of strips not included in the book. Anyway, if you missed what could've been the greatest newspaper strip of all time, buy this book. There are a LOT of strips the cartoonist didn't include, but this is a pretty good introductory collection for the strip. Too bad this is the "first, last and only" collection. I'd say the strip's entire run should be released in a series of books.
