Brian “Legs” Hamilton is a tortured, complex, intelligent young man. He is blessed to have some of the best friends a person could ask for. They consider themselves the greatest of philosophers, debaters, theologians, and adventurers. They are unafraid to conquer whatever the world may throw at them… whether it be free-climbing a thousand foot cliff, or attempting to smoke the largest joint known to man. After graduating from college, Legs and his friends embark upon one last road trip before they must face the real world… rafting the extreme rapids amidst the canyons of the Rio Grande River along the Mexican border as their final chaotic drug-fueled exploit. A five-day adventure that was supposed to be the best time in these young men’s lives ends up as a nightmare that will haunt them forever. Hubris Falls is a darkly comic, very tragic, fast-paced, brilliant tale that will inhabit your mind long after the final page is turned.

There are few books out there one can name that have such a unique and captivating voice. Dare I say Salinger? Dare I say Palahniuk? Dare I say Coupland? Dare I say Hornby? Damn straight I dare. Matthew Hiley's ability to craft an original voice in an era of pre-fabricated pulp is astonishing. All at once your neurons will no longer feel alone in an ironically disconnected "social-network" absorbed world. Hubris Falls is a beacon of original thought in a culture inundated with Chicken McNovels. Where most writers lose momentum and painfully stretch the page, Matthew Hiley incessantly punches your cerebral cortex with humor, wit, self deprecation and raw vulnerability. The voice will stick with you long after you turn the last page. Many moments in the story will permeate your memories as if they are your own. If there is one book you treat yourself to this year, make it this one. Buy it now, you will thank yourself before the end of page one. Hubris Falls

I have a policy of shutting a book and giving it away if it can't hold me for fifty pages. Hubris Falls sucked me in almost immediately, and I actually burned through the entire book in two sittings. It is a fast read, that evoked genuine laughter at least a dozen times, yet stirred dark places that were hauntingly familiar. The author brilliantly weaves a tale that probes taboo subjects such as race, religion, politics, and the human condition. But it never panders, and it never feels cliche. Mind you, these topics are debated and addressed through the dialogue of a group of recent college graduates who embark on a coming of age, drug-fueled bender on the Rio Grande River. The dialogue is shocking, irreverent, politically incorrect, and real as you could get. The lack of candy coating serves it well. Hubris Falls reads like a modern day Catcher in The Rye, with hints of Less Than Zero, American Beauty, Fandango, Stand By Me and Into The Wild, yet it never feels like a piece of... More > recycled, pop culture trash struggling to be original. It truly is original, funny, thought provoking, and dark as hell, but not depressing. Dare I say cathartic?< Less

Worth the price of admission. Matthew Hiley sculpts an exquisite tale of young men on one of those journey's that mold who they are to become in the shadow of the screwed-up kids that they are. Part confession, part regret and part braggadocio "Hubris Falls" echoes with the voices from all of our young-adulthood's. Some of us listened to the voices, some of us ignored them (destined to become cougars or "men of a certain age") but all of us heard them at one volume or another. What an enjoyable read for a writers first effort. I can only hope Matt writes a prequel.
