What happens when forgiveness, adoption and reconciliation converge in the form of a tiny baby? Miracles occur and lives are changed. A baby is left on an orphanage doorstep in Chongqing, China. Born with a heart defect and no chance of survival without surgery, her only hope is an elderly caregiver named Chien, a God of love and his son Yesu. A world away, in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, a woman named Katie Phelps has dreamed of becoming a mother her whole life but there are two problems: she can’t get pregnant and her husband Aaron isn’t convinced he wants to be a father. Growing up fatherless in the inner city left a hole in Aaron’s heart that he’d blocked off from everyone – including God. As they stumble through the trying and expensive world of fertility, then into the equally complex world of foreign adoption, emotional battles and heart-wrenching decisions threaten to rip their marriage apart until God moves to bring them together in unforeseen... Sep 26, 2009"Excellent writing/Inspirational" For the first few chapters of the book, I thought, why are we hearing so much about the characters' prayers and just tell the story because the story is really good. Well, the power of prayer IS the story. But don't think this is a boring study-guide book, it is a fabulous story about families, relationships and how unfair life seems to be at times. If a book doesn't capture me in 30-50 pages, I put it down. This is very well written and is a compelling story of how God answers many prayers and sometimes in a different form than what we think it should be. I recommend this book for anyone who likes a well-written good story. The bonus is that at the end; you feel like you've just left one of the most inspirational sermons you've ever heard.
Jun 30, 2009"Highly Recommended!" NOT what I'd read...so I thought. I'm into books involving murder, mystery, and gore. When I was approached about this book and all it entailed I honestly wasn't interested. But the more and more I kept hearing about it I just decided to read it for moral support. I was in for an amazing surprise! The words instantly grabbed me within the first few pages and I couldn't stop reading. The author did a wonderful job at not only writing a good book, but forcing the reader in being a part of the story as well. I couldn't help but feel that I was there with the characters. So many times throughout the reading I felt angry, sad, extreme happiness, joy, peace, fear, frustration, etc. All these emotions and more were played out in my own mind and heart that it kept me reading more and more. And what really helped all of this was the fact that scripture is used throughout this book! Seeing characters struggle like I do in my own life and seeing them pull through... More > their trials keeps my faith strong! I strongly urge any reader to pick up this book and give it a shot. Even if you wouldn't typically read this book like I thought I wouldn't, I believe with all my heart that you won't want to put it down. I thank the author for the wonderful gift that's been given to tell such an amazing story and for bringing me along. God bless.< Less
Jun 19, 2009"I loved the book" "When You Come Home" spoke to my heart in ways that few books have before, and none have since. The author pulled me into this book on the first page and kept me with the story until the final page was finished. As I read the story, I felt I was with friends as they walked through the issues they faced. I rejoiced with them, and I cried with them. The book appealed to me as an adoptive mother, but it spoke to my heart on many levels. I kept finding that as I read this fictional work, the Lord truly was speaking to me through the author's words. I totally enjoyed the book, the story was excellent, and the reminders of the Lord's faithfulness encouraged my heart. This is a book I will want to read again, and I will be encouraging my friends to read it also. I highly recommend "When you Come Home" and I encourage anyone to find a copy and enjoy it. I did. This was an absolute "can't put it down" read.
Dec 18, 2008"Funny, poignant, and real" I thoroughly enjoyed When You Come Home. Even though I know people who have gone through international adoption, this book gave me even more insight to what a huge process it is. The conditions that these children live in are so hard for us, here in USA , to conceptualize. Meadors, helps us see the babies, the workers. He shows us the struggles of Christians in countries were Christianity is not allowed. He shows us the strength and tenacity of the couples who choose to take in the children. Meadors writing is funny, poignant and real. I often find Christian fiction trite and prone to trivializing bad situations. Meadors doesn't do that. He shows that a person can have real faith, yet doubt. Love their God, yet be angry with Him. He shows us that we are human, yet Christian. This is something I think we often forget. That we are human, prone to doubt and anger, yet our God is big enough to handle it.
