Mauricio Saravia, remains an inspiration to everyone he met. Though he lived most of his life with McCune-Albright, a severe medical condition, his spiritual strength manifested itself through his art, poetry and photography. Through this collection of poems, Mauricio takes us on a surrealistic journey into his emotions and inner feelings about life, love, reality, time and death and opens a very personal eye on the purpose of our existence and many unanswered questions.

Apr 13, 2011I’ve read “The Book of Whispers,” by Mauricio Saravia many times. His poetry continues to reveal new ways for me to think and view the world. Poets are dreamers each with their own unique style and poetic mode. Yet, they all share an inner life not preoccupied with temporal things. Some words shine with a strange allure. Some thoughts appear flushed from the depths of the dark. Some ideas stretch one’s imagination beyond the impossible. I’m like a traveler who picks them up and carries them with me the rest of my life. I think Mauricio’s poetry embodies the timelessness of wisdom and spirituality. Yet his symbolic surrealistic vision can take on a distinctly modern sensibility. I read his words then shut my eyes. The wet city streets in the middle of the night reflect neon red, green, and yellow. Demanding crowds push but will not look in my face. Dark alleyways are still and silent. Shadowy skyscrapers whisper and sigh in loneliness. These words paraphrase selected Mauricio poems.... More > However, like “Colors of Obsession” and “Wild and Untamed” their creation forms his panorama alone. Beyond the cityscape of traffic jams, “blinding taillights, burning neon and eternal tunnels,” Mauricio writes from the heart of a naturalist as well. He speaks quietly and directly to the landscape of nature, an environ where “you can sail around the world under azure skies,” where “the sun and the moon comes out tonight only for you” and of slicing rain, and “indigo ocean waves.” Further beyond Mauricio is also unafraid to test the illusion of human emotions when searching for love, knowledge, and self. I surrender his words: “The soft fragrance of a wild and vivid Orchid petal,” which lay quietly in the hands. I listen attentively for the “soft murmur of a leaf brushing the porch floor.” I welcome the silence at a time when “hours break into a blue dawn.” Let the journey begin, I’m ready. I make a truce with myself every time I read this book, for life is short. I choose only to live in the poet’s moment of cityscapes, landscapes, or mindscapes. Whether I “listen to the silky sound of the moon rising” or am swept away by “rivers of overmuch,” I accept Mauricio’s poetic music unconditionally. Whether I feel the “Hard rain on a city pavement from silver skies,” or “another dream waits, so warmly,” I allow the forest of his language to easily embrace my spirit. Thus I am always rewarded. In conclusion, as Mauricio explains in “The Warmer Years” I can read the explanation in your passion, I can read the symbols in your feelings, I can read the light in your darkness. For these reasons, and many more, I highly recommend you purchase Mauricio’s “Book of Whispers.” It will become a crown jewel in your poetry collection.< Less
