Young Caravaggio - One hundred rediscovered works - Volume II

ByMaurizio Bernardelli CuruzAdriana Conconi Fedrigolli

In this second volume dedicated to the discovery of the lost works of the young Caravaggio, one will find the one hundred drawings by the painter found in Milan, scrutinized by Maurizio Bernardelli Curuz and Adriana Conconi Fedrigolli in comparison with well-known paintings that reveal the extraordinary, continuous, dense references between the works done in his period of training, unknown until now, and the oil paintings done by Merisi starting with his first stay in Rome. Faces, characters and poses that he would combine in a variety of ways, as if in a puzzle, to create the masterpieces long known to us. It is an astounding convergence, demonstrating that when Caravaggio left Milan for Rome, he carried with him a great wealth of images and ideas. In the second volume, in addition to presenting the newly discovered drawings, the Italian scholars introduce new paintings from the early phase and reconstruct the path of stylistic development taken by the painter in preparation for his move to Rome.
