McGrew is a skilfull diarist and these stories and anecdotes from the bars of his hometown are perfect nuggets of a slightly seamy life; you can imagine Bukowski drinking a few seats along from him. But it isn't gloom and doom; bars are where people go to have fun and as he says in More Music More Music More Music; "if I wanted to be depressed I'd have stayed home by myself." Each story works on its own - they were originally published separately and can be dipped in to and read in any order - but having them all together lets them build in to something richer and bigger and deeper. It's a lovely collection and good to finally have them together as a book.
