TRAIN GONE, SORRY

This book is a singular unit of art in itself, more like a portfolio than separate pieces... it is a saga, a comic book series, an elegy, an anthem. It is a 100 page collection of full color artwork and poetry. The topics range from grief to relationships to hearing loss. It is about being a recordkeeper, a keeper of time. The title is a common American Sign Language idiom that means 'sorry, you missed something we said and no one is repeating it for you', or something along those lines. The train is also a trope for the common elements in all of our lives; the things that have passed and can no longer be retrieved.

Jun 3, 2011Train Gone, Sorry is a powerful, complex and passionate expression of emotion. It speaks to the individual through their own personal lens in life. For me, it is a story of grief, fear and perseverance. Events or “detours” in life sometimes change our “trajectories” in a way where it can be difficult to “see or decide” which path forward to take. But in the end, it is our choice to “stand stationary on the tracks” inhibiting ourselves or “sneak into the boxcar, to look back and wave as it begins barreling forward.” The writing of this book appeared to be a very constructive, introspective and therapeutic way to sort out the many unanswered questions that we all inevitably ask ourselves after experiencing a loss. Train Gone, Sorry is a recommended reading for anyone that has experienced loss; a family member, ability to hear or any other kind of loss. It is also highly recommended to anyone that enjoys a fine, complex and artful expression of passion.
Nov 6, 2009Ms. Skyer has created for us readers lucky enough to find it, an elegy of tremendous scope and far reaching consequence. Biology intertwined with sexuality. Great loves and crushing hatred, topics of mortality and immorality… This book is a enormous achievement both personal and poetic; above all it is imbued with an overwhelming respect and thirst for life. This book reads itself compulsively, from page one till one hundred, at once joyously infectious and genuinely intrequing, a rollercoaster of emotion permeates its’ sparse pages. Divided into thematic segments, this book is exquisitely crafted, with extreme attention to detail and nuance. Written by a young but ambitious poet, Train Gone, Sorry probes at expansive questions and reveals some of the most profound, insightful and humorous poems written of this young century. Ms. Skyer borrows from a deep respect of the inward-looking work of P. Naruda and S. Heaney without bending toward any form of mimicry. Her distinct voice,... More > carefully honed since the publication of previous collection of work, demonstrates poise and assuredness leaving the reader struck by its’ singularity. This collection of poems finds itself woven between gorgeous full-color photography of the young writer, as well as some of her own art work. The balance within the panoply of text and images breathes with life and vigor, a testament to a life of intensity and thought. Buy this book, read it, then read it again.< Less
Nov 5, 2009I was hooked from the very start of this collection. I was totally unable to put this book down once I started it. Melissa's journey and descriptive style are captivating in the least, and draw one in so deeply that I found myself engrossed in the feelings and emotions that the author so vividly described. From sadness to joy to passion and fear, Melissa takes the reader on a fascinating ride through the workings of her mind and it is a ride that I for one would get in line for again. The book is not only well written and spellbinding, but the design and illustrations make it a work of art as well. Many thanks to Ms. Skyer for sharing this beautiful experience with us.
