Laugh out loud as you follow rookie firefighter Troy on his first day at Fire Station 8. With floors to mop, new tools to learn, and buckets of water to duck, there's lots of laughs and helpful tips for any new kid. The pressure is on as Troy tries to fit in with his crew while showing his lieutenant that he's a hard worker. Can he keep a steady hand while pouring coffee, as he waits to catch a fire on his first day?
Written and illustrated by a firefighter for rookies of all ages.
"A Great Window" This was an excellent story. I bought one for my nieces and nephews to have in Texas. The book enables them to see what my days are like as a rookie with great illustrations. They love it and read it often at bedtime. This book is a terrific window into the different world of life as a rookie firefighter. Troy exhibits many of the feelings that are truly felt during those first days, months, years! Kudos, Mia!! Five Stars!! Can't wait for your next book!
"Great detail in story and illustration" The Good Rookie is a fun read for both kids and parents. The skillfully written story is full of great detail that makes Troy's first day at Station 8 come to life, and the illustrations peppered throughout are similarly subtle and rich. Kids will love the realistic illustration on the cover and the appendix of Troy's rookie notebook with its drawings of every imaginable piece of firefighting equipment. Each time we finished a chapter, my six-year-old begged me to read him another, and I imagine that older grade school readers will devour this story with equal zeal. This one is a must-read for all those firefighting-obsessed boys and girls out there. Children who loved Peter Sis's Fire Truck as toddlers will love The Good Rookie once they're five or older.
"Left me wanting to read more!" This book is a fun read, full of laughs and surprises. The author's doodles, emulating the main character Troy's own notebook, really drew me into Troy's mind as I followed his first day at the firehouse. This is a middle-reader chapter book, but it would be a great bedtime read-along for younger children because of all the cute illustrations on each page. If your kids love playing firefighter, or you know someone who just got hired on the job, this book is a must!
"A Unique Look Inside" The Good Rookie Mia Zierk is a talented and gifted author and illustrator. Her detailed drawings add a personal touch to the story about a rookie's first day on the job at a firehouse. The author presents a unique look at the inside fraternity of a firefighter's relationship with his comrades. The right of passage into the brotherhood is humorous and makes you wonder if this rookie will treat future firefighters the same way. I look forward to the author's next book.
