The Past, the Polite and the Unreal

A study of the use of various verb forms in the Romance languages to indicate doubt and politeness. An underlying semantic theory is proposed to account for all of these uses as simply as possible. Examples are taken from French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Rumanian and various other Romance languages and dialects at various stages in their history.
