"Layabouts Book Review" The book Layabouts is an insight into the ways the youth of today is being viewed. The PDF of this book gives a real flavour of the style of the printed book; bold photography being left to speak for itself without the intrusion of text into the framework. The concept of the book is immediately clear from the front cover - an empty work environment leaves the viewer feeling a sense of laziness, with noone working it defiantly feels as if the people have just left it without a care in the world. However, as the book progresses the stereotype of lazy youth comes into question more and more as the situation becomes more and more obvious, with images of the youth clearly hard at work in their own way. The images mix colour and black and white in a vibrant display of bold layout and composition throughout the book, with careful use of double page spreads to help emphasis a particular photo or situation. The images are all high contrast images, with... More > striking lines throughout all the images which leads to a very pleasurable composition throughout. The focus work on the images is also very sharp and alongside the angle the images are taken from lead to a feel boarding on the voyeuristic, without the sense of being invasive or intrusive - a methodology which really helps to convince the viewer that the situations are as natural as possible given the circumstances. The square layout helps keep the eye pinned in on the images, never straying too far from the focal point of any page. This combines with an great sense of movement throughout the book to really give the concept the backbone it requires to give it the credibility it needs with that particular subject. The focus on youth's and their work environment weaves throughout the book pulling the project together very well. Despite it's length (itself a testament to how hard working the youth can be!) it is not a difficult book to continue though, as well as being very easy to flick to a particular page and just admire each photograph on it's own merits. ~Richard Harley< Less
