This bookI hated. I read it not without enjoyment, and there is some interesting material there, but in my view, it does not really constitute a novel. Rather, it reads more like the stream of consciousness musings, reflections, observations and memories of a man who finds himself somewhat adrift in life. You can argue that loosely it has a story with a beginning, a middle of sorts, and a rather abrupt ending, but the meanderings along the way – what you refer to as the switches – mean that the narrative arc is somewhat elusive. It is instead more a series of mostly unrelated scenes and episodes, not a structured, progressing plot. You describe the book as an ‘erotic thriller’. Nobody could deny the eroticism, but in what sense, I wonder, do you define the story as a ‘thriller’? Yes, the narrator buys a gun. His reasons for doing so are not really transmitted, though I assumed it was a reaction to his nightmare about the two boys threatening him in the back of his limo. He... More > occasionally thinks about the gun in his car, and at one point considers using it to kill the girlfriend that he’s too cowardly to ditch. Then of course, in an exact replay of the earlier nightmare, the two boys get in the car and threaten him again, only this time he shoots them dead, and legs it to Paris to start a new life with a 22-year-old girl he believes himself in love with. Or was all that a dream, or a delusion, too? I wasn’t sure. The bulk of the novel, though, concerns his erotic pursuits, fantasies and reminiscences and the ‘thriller’ dimension felt more like a device with which to facilitate the primary interest.< Less
