Records of the Slave Claims Commissions, Volume Three: Journal of the First Maryland Commission
During the Civil War, the U. S. War Department authorized loyal slave owners to receive compensation for their slaves who joined the Union Army. The slave claims commissions were established in the border states to judge these claims. This Journal presents the proceedings of the Maryland commission, the first to begin the process. It provides unique insight into the operations of the board, and the claims it heard.
