Having encountered a quaint little village located deep in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, Eli Walker and Marishka Taranova think they have found the perfect retreat to hide away their darkest secrets. Little do they know that the isolated town of Woodland Point is concealing a few secrets of its own, and they are slowly beginning to come to light. A series of haunting disturbances wreak havoc in the once quiet locale, and as a former constable, Eli is in a race against time to uncover the secrets whilst struggling with his own, in this nineteenth century chilling mystery novel.

The first thing that strikes me with An Orphaned Visitor is it volume: over 300 densely printed pages; and I love a good, long story. It’s also said that you shall not judge a book by its cover, but this is cover has a chilly eeriness over it, that sets the atmosphere of the book perfectly! It’s a story about Eli and Marishka, a London constable and his adopted helper, who work very closely together to solve some mysterious killings in Woodland Point. Most of the characters are so skillfully described you feel you get to know them, and the settings – whether it’s the forgotten American wilderness or the godforsaken town of Vilnius – are equally vivid and genuine. The story is intriguing, sad in a way, and the ending leaves you breath-taken. I’m definitely going to keep my eyes open for more books from this author. Very well done for a first book!
