Price: $2.96
Eight criteria to assist someone new to firearms in choosing their first defensive handgun. The goal of this booklet is to help someone make the right choice when they select their first handgun. If you are just coming to terms with the need to provide for your own safety but have little or no past interest in firearms, this booklet is for you. If you are just now considering the purchase of a handgun for self-defense, this booklet was written with you in mind. If you are a person friends look to as an “expert”, I hope you will find this booklet worth recommending. If you are looking for a firearm for a military or police environment, this may be helpful, but certainly not comprehensive. There are other books by authors with extensive military or police experience that will be more suitable for you.

"First Handgun - Making the Right Choice " This book hits the mark! Everyone who wants a firearm for self defense should have to read this first. I agree completely with Mr. Johnson on all the aspects covered in this book. As a firearms collector I am often asked "what gun should I purchase for protection?". I never have a satisfactory answer for them. From now own I'll just recomend this book before purchasing a firearm.

"Choosing Your First Handgun" I just downloaded and read completely (without leaving my computer) Choosing Your First Handgun. I have been carrying a concealed handgun for over six years, and was pleased to learn that, unwittingly perhaps, I have followed the book's advice in my choice of weapon. My reason for buying the book, however, was that I am in the process of encouraging my adult children and their spouses to obtain CHL's, and three out of the four need to select an appropriate defensive weapon. Since I am their principle source of information, I wanted more than my own experience to draw on, when giving them advice. I very much appreciate the information contained in Choosing Your First Handgun, and it will be of great value to my son and daughter and their spouses in selecting their defensive weapons. I had two comments about the content of the book. From the standpoint of selecting a weapon, I would suggest more emphasis on being able to rack the slide on a... More > semi auto and operate the magazine release without changing the firing grip in any major way. Although being able to reach and operate the controls is mentioned in passing, I have found that persons unfamiliar with firearms generally turn the gun sideways to some degree to be able to move their thumb over the magazine release button, and in some cases need help from their weak hand to release the magazine. To me, this is not acceptable in a personal defense weapon. Ease of operating the slide is also mentioned in passing. To me, being able to rack the slide back, which is essential to clear any kind of jam, again without moving the gun off the target, is a very important consideration and should be practiced (along with releasing the magazine) while checking the gun for proper grip in the store before purchasing it. Both of these points would be worth covering in Chapter three. The final comment is that in addition to trying several firearms on for grip at the store, it is very valuable if the prospective purchaser has a chance to try several different weapons out at the range prior to buying. One dealer in our area (Houston) allows you to purchase a "used" gun from his stock, and if you don't like it return it for full credit. In the case of my daughter in law, who had never fired a gun before, I was able to take her to the range and shoot several sizes and calibers of handguns.. After determining that her small hand size was really going to be major factor in her selection, I then consulted a large gun store - as the book advises - to settle on an appropriate pistol, which met all of the criteria so well described in the book. These points aside, I found the book to be a very complete guide to choosing a handgun - first or not, and I have not found all of the information presented in any one source before. Also, the process of getting the book via download was very easy.< Less
