The Quakers once had a clear and positive alternative to what usually passes for Christianity. George Fox had a sound knowledge of Scripture and a good understanding of early Christian development and he combined this with an unusual appreciation of what that could still mean to us now. He believed that there was something badly wrong with the way in which the gospel of Jesus was being presented and that this betrayal had started only about forty years after the death of Jesus. That brings us to 70 CE — the end of the Jewish War against Rome and the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. It was the decisive turning point in the development of both Judaism and Christianity. What evidence is there to validate the claim made by Fox that for Christians this was also the beginning of what he called “The Great Apostasy”?
Our Christian Roots presents a historical review of Christian origins that is in line with Scripture and modern scholarship and invites Friends to think again about their “Christian roots”.
