Forget about the guy who wrote The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. He has a replacement. Michael LaRocca’s Conundrum is about the craziest science fiction novel I’ve ever read and yet a really good one. His style grabs you by the shirt collar and shakes you until all your preconceived notions of modern science fiction have been knocked loose from your mind. Then you’re ready to continue. His protagonist is brasher than an alley cat on steroids and carries a ditty bag stuffed full of one liners that he flings around like scams at a hustler’s convention. Just think of Shell Scott, that peripatetic PI of the fifties combined with Get Smart then throw in a seasoning of Mickey Spillane toughness and you’ll have some idea of what you’re getting into. It’s a reading experience not to be missed! Darrell Bain, Fictionwise Author of the Year
