Bees account for 70% of foodstuffs consumed by mankind with bee pollination crucial for plants to thrive and survive. The Black European Honeybee Apis mellifera mellifera is under threat due to nicotinoid pesticicides, colony collapse disorder and the varroa mite which infests and decimates hives. In general careful beekeepers are essential for maintaining colonies of healthy bees. Bees are rewarding they quite often do the unexpected and the reward of the annual honey collection is a bonus. Micheal Manning's book provides an insight into how humans lived sustainably in the 1930s and which is still attainable in modern times.
