The Eastern Front - Der OstFront - was the largest battlefield ever fought over by mankind. The June 22, 1941 three attacking armies of the German Wehrmacht were exposed before the battle for Moscow as inadequate to defeat the Red Army with its limitless land area and unlimited reserves of potential army recruits. Despite the Wehrmacht eliminating the peacetime Red Army of 4 million men by December 1941 and the fact that Japan did not declare war on Russia, meant that 18 fresh Siberian divisions were released to blunt the German threat to Moscow. Germany held onto the vital rail heads of Rzhev, Orel and Bryansk which ensured the German Army was well supplied to withstand the waves of wasteful Russian frontal assaults from fixed well protected and pre-prepared defences. The OstFront was stabilised until at least April 1942.
