Geologic hazards such as coastal erosion, landslides, seismic loading, etc. constantly threaten public highways. Terrestrial laser scanning surveys enable rapid 3D data acquisition to map and analyze the processes behind these events. Previously, change detection and analysis was conducted back in the office. A new algorithm quickly geo-references scans and detects changes by comparing to baseline models. This algorithm has been integrated with a simple, intuitive GUI. Change detection in the field offers significant advantages to post-processing workflows. First, it allows key observations while still on site. Second, it can improve the efficiency of the survey, allowing areas of minimal change can be surveyed at coarser resolutions and areas of substantial change can be scanned at higher resolutions, reducing processing time and data maintenance.
