This book represents an initial attempt to identify the genealogical lines of the Cleaves and Harriman family trees from the perspective of my father, Stanley Norman Cleaves. It is of remarkable note that both direct lines, as well as most of the branching lines, date back to the founding days of the New World. As a result, there are a number of Mayflower passengers at the root of this tree, as well as New World immigrants who arrived in the immediate years following. These were the people who were here at the very beginning of American settlements, and there were very few of them at that. In 1620, the Mayflower carried only 102 men, women and children. In 1621, a few more ships arrived with an equally small number of settlers. Those who survived that first harsh winter, and the winters that followed, did so by prospering both in wealth and kin.
