Price: $11.90
The illustrations of Keith Conaway and the story-songs of Cecil Williams present the American West as few have known it. Coupled with Michael Patrick’s narrative, a neglected part of American history becomes vivid. The role of African-Americans in settling the West comes alive. The explorers, homesteaders, cowboys, outlaws, cavalrymen, rodeo riders, and town founders are all there, filled with life and energy and telling a complete story of the West. Their living on the plains and in mountains in a free, relatively integrated society is a story that completes the history of a country that is diverse and colorful.

"The Black West in Story and Song" If you are interested in American history, specifically the Old West, this is a book you want to read. It will give you a new perspective how the West was really won, who was involved, and what it cost. I couldn't put the book down until I read it cover to cover. Reviewer: T. L. Cale

"A New Deminsion to the Old West" I've always loved reading about the Old West, but this book adds a new deminsion for me. The combination of stories, songs, and drawings about Black westerners is excellent. I'd recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the West.

"Delightfully presented and thought-provoking" "The Black West in Story and Song" is a well-rearched, delightfully presented and thought-provoking account of a fascinating but generally ignored aspect of American history. Few Americans, Black or white, learned anything in school about Black cowboys and their adventurous companions. Through Michael Patrick's folksy narrative and the meticulous portraits drawn by Keith Conaway, the stories come alive on the page. Cherokee Bill, handsome and enigmatic; capable, entrepreneural "Stagecoach Mary; and trusted trail drive banker Bose Ikard, along with over a dozen others, add a new dimension to the western folklore and history we all learned as children. The "Song" in the title is provided by Cecil Williams, whose stage name is Panhandle Slim. The book includes Williams' lyrics and music in ballads inspired by each of the featured characters. Some of the best songs are about the Buffalo Soldiers, the Black... More > Seminole Scouts, and other groups just now making it into our history books. A reader can savor the poetry and attempt to sight-read the melodies, but the best approach is to buy Panhandle Slim's CD of the turnes reproduced in the book and play it while reading the stories or looking into the faces of these no longer unsung heroes. In Houston, Texas, the annual rodeo parade includes a group of Black riders, 200 strong, fresh off a trail ride and decked in their finest western wear. I know they will enjoy this book about their hard-riding forebears. Anyone, of any race, who yearns for a more complete story of the West should buy, read, and share this book.< Less

"A Great Bibliography" Obviously "The Black West in Story and Song" has been carefully researched. It has a great bibliography that will be useful to anyone interested in the West. The biographical sketches, illustrations, and songs come together with the bibliography to make this a very fine book.
