"Wendy Howe, poet and editor, says..." In his latest work, Chicken Bones, poet, Michael Paul Ladanyi, explores the anatomy of the human condition. Suspended somewhere between life and death, his verse defines a tangible loneliness and a yearning to connect with fate, to understand its unpredictable logic. The poet uses basic elements of nature and mortality to expose the bone work of love, sorrow, solitude and acceptance. His words excavate the intensity of Life's experience. In "Sun Wheels", The speaker observes how memory ,worn and washed over time, reveals the past in a sacred almost funereal way. bleached bones or something remembered found beneath the rumored sand. The past continues to haunt the reader and the speaker throughout this entire collection of poetry. Its powerful grief rises to breathtaking emotion and ritual when the author confesses in the book's title poem, "Chicken Bones"; Yesterday, I opened the hands of my dead brother through... More > etched marble that displays his name, placed on crucifix shadows from the gutted sun into his palms. This tribute to "William after a visit to his grave" strikes a chord in those of us who have experienced the loss of a sibling or partner. Touching the headstone, intensifies the loss and suffering we endure from that void in our own lives. It lends us the ability to identify and expose feelings that engendered our weakness and strength, our courage and fear. Others poems in this series continue to affect the reader with the same fervor and depth that show how individuals cope with pivotal moments and seasons testing their existence. Throughout these pages, we hear the nameless murmuring of souls and natural forces that compose a landscape of compelling interest. Once again, Michael Paul Ladanyi, with his chapbook, Chicken Bones, leads us to that place of intimate survival, echoing strains of Theodore Roethke or Dylan Thomas, as we listen to and embrace our stark humanity, as stated in “Dog and Flea“, and become... ...an estranged wind punished on this scribbled sidewalk, naked ghost pain seeking insects for substance in lily valleys.< Less
