Song of the Spring Peepers by Michael Reade Sitzman is an important book—both for young readers and the grown-ups who care about them. It tells the story of a group of engaging kids who band together to deal with prejudice and bullying. Sitzman shows how the power of friendship—no matter the differences among friends—can help people navigate the tricky waters of peer-group relationships. The book also treats very current topics (e.g., transgender issues, sexual orientation, cyberbullying) with great sensitivity. Having understanding parents is important, and the ability to express oneself well in words proves to be a key asset for several of the characters. Buy this book for any young person you know who feels like an outsider…and even for those who don’t.
