This is a well written novel taking a familiar genre and turning it on its head with an exciting twist. The plot concerns a female journalist trying to break into a group of 'superheroes' who play out their roles of protectors of society against similar groups of 'villains' in Silver City. The journalist's intention is to write a series of articles on what motivates people to live their fantasies in a safe and orchestrated series of costumed clashes. Things take a dark turn when some of those playing roles start to die and it is clear that there is a real villain behind the deaths. The main character who uses the superhero name of 'Mole' finds herself in a series of frightening situations while trying to work out the identity and motivation of the killer. The book is really well written with sparkling dialogue and great descriptions of the dramas. The characters are superhero 'wannabes' who find that their fantasy roles may be the death of them. There is a cracking pace to the story... More > and well developed characters. There is a satisfying conclusion where the twist is revealed. The author has published a number of short stories in text and graphic novel collections. This is his first full length novel, which is a real success. I really enjoyed the combination of 'superhero' action, the humour, and suspense. Overall, a cracking read.< Less
