Feb 27, 2010This is the editor's review primarily to ensure that you know that this is essentially a paperback version of the original classic. It is not heavily revised but rather an effort to make the original work available at a reasonable cost. It remains reasonably accurate and the materials in this first volume still form the sound basis for a basic fish medicine course. The original work sold widely and made a huge impact on the practice of clinical fish medicine. It's content is still extremely useful and valid today, perhaps evidenced by the outrageous costs of obtaining a copy now that it is out of print. The second volume is nearing completion and we hope to have it available by the end of summer if not well before. It will include the 85 special medicine chapters as well as repeating the appendices. A couple of the original appendices were deleted because they were so far out of date and also to spare some cost of the books. These were the list of fish diagnostic laboratories and the... More > listing of sources for supplies. The taxonomic appendices have not been updated to current taxonomy again to keep costs down, but are still very useful. When the second volume is completed you will have the option of buying each volume separately or buying the set of two volumes. The combined cost of buying each volume separately will be the same as for buying the set other than whatever factor shipping costs may play in the event so you need not necessarily wait for the second volume to have the first. I take a certain pride in the fact that the paperback second edition set will sell for less than what the original did when it came out back in 1993. Assuming response is adequate to this effort to inspire the investment, I hope to produce an updated and expanded third edition but even the most optimistic time table would have the first volume of that yet to be started work appearing in January of 2014. So again there is probably no reason to wait for it if you would find this volume useful. A word about the printing process is in order. I have learned a great deal about how the on demand printing process works in trying to get this volume produced. Because the original was done before electronic publishing there were numerous challenges and as a result some compromises. Some figures and tables are not as crisp as I had hoped and some interesting font variations crop up in some places with subscripts and superscripts. But we have done a good job of mimicking the original Fish Medicine text look and feel. The on demand printing of the book when you order it is done by different printers depending on where you live or perhaps more accurately where you have the book shipped to when you purchase it. Actually it seems there may be even different printers in an area and it will be printed by different ones at different times. I have noticed a massive difference in the quality of the printing job from something that looks like a poor photocopy to very well printed books. Setting Author and Editor pride aside, even the worst have been readable, but be forewarned, LULU.com has a problem with print quality control. It can be fabulous or it can be be sad. If you receive a book that is inadequate you need to work through LULU.com. ART Sciences has nothing we can do about that issue. LULU.com does have a return policy but I will tell you up front their customer service for publishers isn't what I would call good. I'm hoping it is better for customers. But what they do offer is the most affordable approach to getting something like this available and for that I am grateful. If you have been wanting to get a copy of the classic, this is your chance to do it at a reasonable cost.< Less
