A thoroughly enjoyable read in the J.G. Ballard tradition of a future that has fractured from our past to reveal a new now and a future fraught with power and resource struggles in all the wrong places. The bleakness is offset by an interesting kaleidoscope of characters which root the dystopia in the familiar mores of relationship angst. Highly entertaining.

Can you conceive of a parallel universe in which the USA is the United States of Africa, and North America is a bunch of colonies, where the Bolshevik Revolution never took place and Russia is the land of capitalism? Michael Westlake uses four characters to narrate the story, two Russian sisters and two African friends, a history of the 20th century that is brain-teasingly other than what we know. Katerina is a genetics researcher who discovers a way to forestall the aging process, which will have worldwide consequences. Hilarious plays on names, an espionage plot, and romantic and sexual intrigue. The novel is both World Enough - and Time.
