ByMichaela A Lawler-Levene

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
A fascinating read full of research, old photos and recorded personal stories, this book takes the reader on a journey in time from before the park's Edwardian origins, through two World Wars, up to today. It not only tells a community and park story — which will be of interest to those seeking inspiration for similar projects in their own community - it also highlights the role of the park in Southampton's military and civil defence during World War Two, and the role played by local residents in the production of Southampton's iconic Spitfire. In 2010-2011, St James' Park in Shirley, Southampton underwent a major programme of restoration and improvements. This book tells the story of how a group of dedicated local residents formed a Friends group and worked with the wider community to change their local park for the better, with help and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Big Lottery Fund, and Southampton City Council.
