Bringing together a group of social scientists including undergraduates, postgraduates, lecturers and researchers, both within academe and without, this collection of papers addresses the question: how are the identities of the social sciences (as a discipline), and social scientists (as individuals), shaped through the way they are learnt and taught within HE (Higher Education)? The impact of the current transformations in HE – for example, changes in student grants, HEFCE funding levels, increasing student numbers, and the new re-categorisation of ‘student as customer’ – are being experienced at departmental levels in Universities across the UK, including our own, Sociology and Social Anthropology at the University of Hull. In this volume, our intention has been to capture how these current transformations, perceived or actual, impact on the identity of individual social scientists as well as the identity of disciplines.
