In the Summer of 2012, as you’ll read and see in these pages, Coach Steve Bandura took his love of baseball—along with his Anderson Monarchs players—to a whole new level by taking his team of 10-to-13-year-olds on a bus trip around the country. The purpose of the trip was to teach the kids about the legacy of Black baseball and to show them a bigger America in the process. The trip included stops in lots of cities, including memorable visits to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and Jackie Robinson’s gravesite. The kids also played a whole lot of baseball. It was exhausting, but they could sleep when they got home.
