"Wooden Nickel" Wooden Nickel is an entertaining and easy read, with great insight to life growing up in the 60's and 70's from the simplicity of Oklahoma to the hustle and bustle of California. Loosely based on fact, Mike Evett creates real-life characters with realistic fears, hopes and dreams. It's a story of Bobby Hughes growing up in middle-class America and the contrasting life it can sometimes create, from the need to succeed as a parent, to the struggle for acceptance within a child. It's a touching story about love and life with relationships that even the toughest heart can relate to. A great read for all ages and creeds!

"Wooden Nickel" Curses and conspiracy. Drugs, sex, and rock-and-roll. A time to live, a time to die, a time to contemplate life’s cruelties, realities – and pleasures. It’s about growing up in the 60s, maturing in the 70s, and fate. It’s about the ageless love-hate relationships of children and their parents. Its laughter and tears, romance and betrayal, friendships and enemies, love and abuse. And timely home runs by Willie Mays. Mike Evett, in his first novel, has woven life’s threads from two generations into a believable, entertaining, and very real story. He captures the essence of young Bobby Hughes, from the plains of Oklahoma to the suburbs of California. He digs into the mind of Bobby’s father, Justin, a World War II veteran whose best intentions are often overshadowed by dark intensity and violence. He takes you into the caverns of the exploding aerospace industry where profits are often more important than humanity. High school, the accompanying insecurities and... More > sophomoric antics provide much of the backdrop – and some very engaging comic relief - to Bobby’s world of music, athletics and personal relationships. It’s a good read.< Less
