Here are stories of two families migrating and marrying and just about making their way, from the 1860s in agricultural Suffolk to the 1960s in a declining West Riding mill town. An estate labourer's first son, a harness maker's fourth, an itinerant miner's illegitimate daughter, a fish porter's fourth; a trawlerman's daughter 'surrounded with love', a clog repairer's son who has a grim time as a commando in the Adriatic; and the son of a mill girl and a bus driver who becomes the first in his family to leave his home town for study not as a member of the labouring poor. In the first and last chapters, the question is raised: what are humble origins, and in what way may they matter? This is the first of three volumes exploring this, in different times and modes.
