Mayfield's Bulldogs: Out of the Wilderness and Into the Promised Land chronicles the remarkable history of Borger (Texas) High School football under legendary West Texas high school coach Gene Mayfield. After taking over a forlorn program at Borger in 1958, Mayfield quickly turned it around, winning Borger's first district title in his initial year at the helm. Subsequent Mayfield teams won three more district titles, and his 1962 squad achieved the school's first No. 1 statewide ranking en route to the state finals. All told, during Mayfield's seven years at Borger, 1958-64, the Bulldogs averaged a 9-2 season record.
