When 15 year old Denise Suthers decides to form a gang in her summer holidays she barely knows what that means, though she knows what it doesn’t mean: ‘…we don’t go around shooting people and painting graffiti everywhere,’ says one of her friends. But then this is the well-scrubbed, well-behaved identikit suburbia that rings the towns and cities of nominally Anglo-Saxon countries. Denise’s principal adversary is surly and cocky Alex Miller who lives in a neighbouring street. Between them they mark out their respective turf and vow to defend it at whatever cost. Denise’s gang largely comprises friends with whom she has grown up. There is one addition, however - Chris, whose family have recently arrived from Germany. Cue brief passages in his native tongue which mean as much to me as Klingon and don’t add much in the way of authenticity. Gang activities consist of little more than 1950s style water bombs, tag and baseball. I was waiting throughout for the frolics to explode into... More > something awful as the taunts and the tension builds between Denise and Alex. However, it never really does. When it all falls apart it is more of a whimper than an explosion and calm returns quicker than the new school term. There are a few typos and I feel that it is better to justify the text because leaving it ragged gives it the feel of a draft. Overall, Gangs of Suburbia is well written and is full of old-fashioned charm but is by definition very light.< Less
