Six months ago Detroit Police Detective Johnny Thornton's girlfriend died in a drug sting. Most people couldn't care less about the murder of a known prostitute, but someone did, IAD. To Internal Affairs this didn't seem like a drug deal gone bad, they smelled a hit. A contract killing orchestrated by one of their own, only without evidence or a credible eyewitness, the case soon went cold. It stayed that way until the shooter, a smalltime pimp named Cletus, got himself arrested. Even stranger was the fact that Detective Thornton had a chance to silence Cletus, but didn't. His finger froze on the trigger, allowing the only witness to his girlfriend's murder to live. Detective Thornton is busy working a new case. One involving a drug related drive-by, innocent victims and revenge. Johnny races against the clock to bring the shooters to justice before the slaughtered family's patriarch finds a unique way to extract his own brand of revenge.

Dec 8, 2007"The book grabs you early and doesn't let go!" In this book Miles Lawrence drops us right into the action with Police Detective Johnny Thornton. Johnny's questionable motives and clouded past make for interesting situations. Just when you think you have him figured out you realize you couldn't be further from the truth. Miles succeeds in creating a vivid and unique ensemble that keeps the entire story entertaining. One minute you’re following a conceded, self centered news reporter and then a grieving father struggling to cope with his life being turned upside down. I recommend Indignant Reprisals to anyone looking for a good read. It’s a blend of many elements which appeals to all readers. Great book Miles, I look forward to reading more from you.
Nov 18, 2007"New author publishes first novel" As it appeared in the October issue of "5th Street Magazine:" New author publishes first novel By Jonathan Eppley Detective Johnny Thornton’s pregnant hooker girlfriend was just murdered in a vacant apartment building during a drug sting he set up. The killer was able to get away before the cavalry could barge in and save young Tammy. Everything looks as though Johnny’s the one who ordered the hit on his girlfriend. The only one who can clear Johnny’s name is the one who pulled the trigger and he’s nowhere to be found, that is until Johnny arrests him six months later in downtown Detroit. Johnny finally has the only one who can clear the air of suspicion about him for ordering Tammy’s death as if it were on a restaurant menu. But internal affairs have other plans for the man in custody. IAD want to use the killer’s testimony to finally nail Johnny as the dirty cop everyone thinks he is… and he is dirty, very dirty. This is... More > part of the plot in the Detroit based police novel Indignant Reprisals by new author, Miles Lawrence. Lawrence used his few years of experience as a Hazel Park police officer to write this story, his first published novel. Lawrence, now a welding engineer for General Motors in Flint, said he was never much of writer, barely a reader. But one day this story just “popped” into his head and wouldn’t go away. “I had to write it,” he said. In the story Lawrence uses an effective technique to confuse the reader. The three main character’s names all start with the letter J; Johnny Thornton, Jay Branden and Jessie Barton. He said this was done to blur the lines between who is good and who is evil. All three characters have both types of qualities to make you question who is really innocent and guilty. The twisting tale of Detective Thornton and his dead hooker girlfriend is an excellent story, but you can tell Lawrence is a young author. He attributes this to the fact that his story has not been professionally edited, because published the book himself. Lawrence used the self publishing website Readwriteshare.net to print copies of his book as necessary. He printed several copies to sell and handout, so he could get his name out there. “Maybe I’ll hit on something, maybe I won’t,” he said. “I’m not trying to make any money right now. I’m just trying to get noticed.” He said he makes about 50 cents on each book sold. “It’s a real grassroots operation,” said Lawrence who self edited the novel with the help of a few friends who were not afraid to give constructive criticism. Indignant Reprisals can be ordered on Lulu.com for $12.99, and is to soon be available on Amazon.com and Borders.com. Lawrence is currently working on self publishing his second novel, Heeltap, about a multi-million dollar insurance scam where everyone is bad and there are no hero’s. He expects it to be released just after the first of the year.< Less
