All he wanted was justice. Even that was too much to ask.
“It´s mine. It is my journal. It was written a long time ago, but it tells the story of a young man who was unjustly condemned and driven from his home, forced to leave his roots behind, abandoned by his family. He was alone for many years and suffered every calamity. It is my story. My confession. I want you to have it.”
He handed it to me like the sacrament, with a tear in his eye. He saw me as his successor and I was touched.
“You wrote all this?” I thumbed through about a hundred pages written in an elegant hand. The pages were aged and ripped, but it was legible. Here were the secrets of his amazing life. It was all in Greek, but I managed to read the first line:
“This is the true story of Artemis Papayiannis who did battle in the Great War and fought against the oppressors of Greece…”
