Very enjoyable read captures the essence of a seanchai (Irish story teller) and describes the story of a young Irish man who has special powers who emigrates from Ireland to America. Does a nice job connecting how historically these special powers arose in the first place and then how they get used up to the modern day. It is poignant how the story describes a fractured father son relationship in America and how it can be hard to forgive or forget easily. For a short story it is quite powerful in how it showed the importance of family and does so with both elegance and wit.

There are some truths we accept when we are told them and without question. There are other truths that reveal themselves slowly and gently over time, and still others that will pull you kicking and screaming into the light of knowledge. The Cloak of Mordan is all of these. The "story of a man who held true to his beliefs and his origins" is a moving story of Donnacha, as he moves from childhood to adulthood, and Ireland to America, all the while keeping the traditions and stories alive inside himself and his family for wisdom, inspiration, strength, and protection. Eventually, these same stories lead this son of Ireland home. As with most Irish stories, the power is in the poignancy of love, loss, redemption, and homecoming. Go raibh mile maith agat a MJG.

An engaging young adult novella which skilfully weaves the world of traditional storytelling in the west of Ireland together with a young emigré's adaptation to Boston and eventual healing of a torn relationship with his son. M.J. Graham tells this tale with sensitivity, humor, and a gift for detail that are sure to delight every reader.
