Zimbabwe held the 2002 presidential elections in line with the Constitution. According to press reports the 2002 presidential elections were characterized by the implementation of an unprecedented systematic nationwide campaign of violence and intimidation that was aimed at terrorizing the rural and the urban electorate and preventing the MDC from mounting a serious public political challenge to the ruling party anywhere in the country.
