The coming-of-age novel is a popular genre, one sprinkled with the likes of such famous works as A Catcher in the Rye and A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (Yes, I put those in the same sentence). The novella wades in this familiar territory but does so in a completely original way. For one, this novella is centered around an ensemble of characters, rather than a singular protagonist. The author also remembers that adolescents are not fully developed or even able to fully articulate their fears, desires, and questions. Zemper tells a simple story but one that jumps off of the page with his humor, candor, and youthful discovery. Yes, Griffin, is on a road trip across the American West, but more importantly he is trying to find a voice, an identity--and this story does not tritely try to claim that he will be able to do overnight. A sensitive and engaging retelling of the classic coming-of-age narrative.

Ben, Griffin, and Hope. Three normal high school students in for the ride of their lives. Along their adventurous road trip, they cope with unforeseen problems that the author conveys with an excellent sense of wit. In a story slightly reminiscent of “The Blues Brothers,” Molly Zemper creates plot turns and roadblocks that left this reader wondering just how the characters would get themselves out of each sticky situation. There was never a dull moment in this world of dynamic friendships and fried Twinkies. Zemper adds a fresh new voice to the literary world through her first novella. I cannot wait for the sequel!

This book is thrilling and connects with we everyday people. The characters are very three dimensional. It was definitely worth buying!
