BOOK REVIEW : The Study Of China Hand Techniques. By Morinobu Itoman. Translated By Mario McKenna. The only other book I can compare this to, is Choki Motobu's 'My Karate' (Watashi No Karate). Like that, this books focus is unlike most pre-war and post war Karate publications. Rather than the performance of techniques and Kata, its focus is on the execution of them against an attacker : and not in the artificial 'Dojo sparring' context. This undoubtedly is due to Itoman's experience as a policeman. Importantly, this book contains a lists outlining the full repertoire of techniques and training methods of pre-war Karate and a comprehensive list of the Kata of Okinawan Karate at the time – 1934. Along with a fascinating chart giving 'breakdown of technique' , which is eye openingly informative. The downside of this book is the photographs that illustrate the text, which are large in number, but are only postage stamp sized. This is not the fault of the translator or the publishers...
